Komarno Giant Mosquito Monument – Komarno, MB
This towering stone-and-metal mosquito pays tribute to the community’s unique name, Komarno, which translates to “mosquito-infested” in Ukrainian. Built between 1984 and 1986 by artist Marlene Magnusson Hourd, the monument proudly marks Komarno as the self-declared “Mosquito Capital of the World.”
A quirky roadside stop, the giant insect has even been featured in an OFF!® bug spray commercial. Don’t be alarmed if it moves; the statue is actually a weather vane that rotates with the wind.
