Interlake Itineraries: 24 hours in Gimli with friends!

Welcome to our adventure in Gimli, Manitoba! If you’re seeking a perfect getaway for a night with friends, look no further than this charming lakeside town. Nestled on the shores of Lake Winnipeg, Gimli offers a blend of natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and a vibrant community. Check out this custom-made itinerary that highlights the delights of Gimli for a memorable evening filled with scenic walks along the harbour, mouthwatering local cuisine, captivating history, and visits to the local shops. Get ready for an unforgettable night in Gimli with your closest pals! Here’s an itinerary we’ve planned for you and your friends!

Arrive in Gimli around 1:30 pm:

    • If you can, head out on a Friday after lunch, and take a half day – you deserve it! Carpool together to save gas and plan to arrive in Gimli in the afternoon.
    • If you’re coming from Winnipeg, it is approximately a one-hour drive away or 90 km. (Directions)

Explore Gimli Harbour 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm:

    • Head to Gimli Harbour, located on the shore of Lake Winnipeg.
    • You can park in the Lakeview Resort parking lot next to the building on Centre Street. (Location)
    • Take a leisurely stroll along the Boardwalk to the Harbour, enjoy the beautiful views, and check out the boats and fishing activities.
    • Walk along the Gimli Sea Wall – a popular tourist attraction that has repeat visitors from around the world. The Gallery is unique as it is built over water, withstanding the harsh elements of our Manitoba climate. Volunteer artists from the Gimli Art Club restore or paint new murals on this structure.

Check in to the Lakeview Gimli Resort at around 3:00 pm:

    • You may get lucky enough to check in before the 3:00 pm check-in time, but it’s not always the case. If you’re early, check in with the friendly front desk staff, they may be able to help you out.
    • Request a room with an amazing view of the Gimli Harbour and the downtown core. Great for taking in the views of Lake Winnipeg and people-watching!
    • Unpack, claim your spots on the beds, and enjoy the patio with some cool drinks before heading out for an adventure.

Visit the Lake Winnipeg Visitors Centre around 4:00 pm:

    • Conveniently located right across the street, their Summer Hours are from May long weekend – September long weekend, 7 days a week, 10:00-6:00.
    • You will be blown away by the new exhibit about the Lake Winnipeg Watershed and the changing Lake Winnipeg with a 30×7 foot long mural by Heather Hinam, Second Nature, Creative Interpretation
    • The Lake Winnipeg Visitor Centre pays tribute to the fishing industry and interprets the natural history of Lake Winnipeg. There is so much to discover here, a definite must-visit while you’re here!

Visit a couple of shops before dinner 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm:

    • In the light of saving some $$, start out your shopping journey at Deals for Dollars. Great for the things you may have forgotten at home like sunglasses, travel mugs, and hats!
    • Next stop on the way to dinner, shopping for authentic Thai clothing and accessories at Thai Plaza! Maybe you’ll find a handmade crochet top from Thailand and short pants for summer!

Dinner at Beach Boy Restaurant 6:00 pm – 6:45 pm:

    • Try local specialties like pickerel, a freshwater fish commonly found in Lake Winnipeg – one of the best places to have it…Beach Boy Restaurant!
    • This place has a wide selection of menu items including vegetarian and vegan options!
    • One of the best aspects of this place is the quick service, creative decor, and the front patio to enjoy your meal with the view of Lake Winnipeg!

After dinner, catch some live and local entertainment 7:00 pm – 10:30 pm:

    • The community often hosts concerts, festivals, or cultural events, especially during the summer months.
    • This year was the first annual Gimli Blues Festival in the Pavillion Park on June 7 & 8! (Free for all)
    • Next up is the Gimli International Film Festival from July 24-28 and the widely popular Icelandic Festival of Manitoba happening from August 2-5.
    • You can always count on the Harbour Stage for some live music, check out the lineup from June 22 and runs all summer long! (Free for all)

Overnight stay:

    • Return to your accommodation for a restful night’s sleep.
    • Share memories of the day and plan for the next day’s activities.

Morning walk to get some coffee and a treat at 8:00 am:

    • After a good night’s sleep, step out into the sunshine for a calming walk to Flatland Coffee Roasters for a morning coffee!
    • Next up, is the incredible Sugar Me Cookie Boutique & Bakery…maybe for a traditional Vinarterta, imperial cookies, or the Buttertart Lady’s famous butter tarts! Or all of the above.
    • With fresh coffee and goodies in hand, it’s time to spend some time relaxing on the beach listening to the sounds of the waves and nature at its finest.

Fuel up for the day with a delicious brunch at 11:00 am:

    • After you check out of your room, it’s time to nourish the soul and body with a delightful brunch at Seagulls Restaurant & The Pier Lounge, located within the Lakeview Resort.
    • With all your favs to choose from, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the quality and freshness of these ingredients.
