Step off Main Street and into a piece of living history at the Riverton Transportation and Heritage Centre, housed in the beautifully restored Canadian Pacific Railway station that first welcomed travellers here in the early 1900s. Once the final stop on CPR’s Winnipeg Beach Subdivision (the end of the line from southern Manitoba), the station still stands today, lovingly preserved as a gateway to the stories of Riverton and the Interlake.
Inside, artifacts, photographs, and firsthand accounts trace the history of Riverton and the surrounding community. You’ll discover the town’s deep Icelandic roots, from its earliest days as “Lundi” (Icelandic for “grove of trees”) on the east bank of the Icelandic River, to the arrival of the railway that gave the community its present name.
Outside, a fully restored caboose sits on the property, a favourite with railway enthusiasts and young visitors alike.
Whether you’re a history buff, a railway fan, a road-tripper exploring the shores of Lake Winnipeg, or simply looking for a memorable stop along the way, the Riverton Transportation and Heritage Centre offers a genuine welcome and a real sense of place.
