A Secret Turquoise Lake and an Island of Goats

Welcome to Steep Rock, Manitoba!

Where dramatically white limestone cliffs rise above some underappreciated turquoise waters. It’s a place almost hidden in plain sight, offering equal adventure and calm. Nearby, you can visit Goat Island, home to Hopper, Pogi and Willy. Three real goats “stranded” on an island within Lake Manitoba.

You really can’t make this up.

At the heart of Steep Rock is Neptune Lake. Once an active limestone quarry, this basin was carved deep into the earth over decades of industrial work. When operations ceased, groundwater gradually filled the quarry, transforming it into the striking lake you see today. Its vivid blue-green colour comes from fine limestone particles suspended in the water, which scatter sunlight and create that signature turquoise glow!

A rare and almost surreal contrast.

This self-guided tour invites you to explore it all, from local businesses and community spaces to scenic trails, quiet lookouts, and hidden gems shaped by both history and nature.

Whether you’ve come for a swim, a wander, or a moment, Steep Rock is a reminder that some of Manitoba’s most extraordinary and unique places aren’t too far away.

Stop 1 Parking & Getting Around

Steep Rock is compact and easy to explore. The entire area spans roughly a 2 km radius, with most attractions clustered within about 1 km along the shoreline, making it ideal for walking or biking between stops.

Parking options include:
Town central parking, a short walk or bike ride to most attractions
South parking lot, close to the cliffs and wheelchair accessible

✔️ Town parking is free

Steep Rock Beach Park has a small daily vehicle fee, but provides quick access to the beach, trails, playgrounds, picnic areas, and campground.

During peak summer hours, arriving early is recommended. Even when parking areas are busy, you’re never far from the water, cliffs, or trails.

Stop 2 Quarry Lake (Neptune Lake) & Lookout Trails

Start your adventure at the Steep Rock Quarry Lookout. Once a bustling limestone quarry, this area is now a scenic natural space with rocky cliffs, winding trails, and picnic spots.

The quarry operated from 1913 to the early 1990s, producing limestone shipped to Winnipeg for Portland cement. At its peak, nearly half a million tonnes of stone were extracted each year, leaving behind a massive basin carved deep into the limestone.

Over time, groundwater filled the quarry, creating what is now known as Neptune Lake.

Its deep, shimmering basin with signature aquamarine colour comes from the fine limestone particles suspended in its waters, scattering sunlight and giving the lake its almost unreal glow.

Today, visitors often kayak across the glassy waters or follow the lake’s edge trails.

Along the trails you’ll find:
Information boards
Garbage and recycling bins
Porta-potties

Stop 3 Steep Rock Heritage Park

After taking in the views around Neptune Lake, take a pit stop at Steep Rock Heritage Park.

Here you’ll see a steam locomotive and electric shovel once used at the limestone quarry, hauling stone that helped build Winnipeg. It’s a tangible reminder of the scale and effort behind what is now a more peaceful spot.

At the centre of the park stands a monument recognizing the quarry’s exceptional safety record. In 1944, the operation ran an entire year without a lost-time injury, a jaw-dropping achievement for that era.

At its peak, the quarry employed more than 150 workers, later declining to 15–20 employees before closing in the late 1980s.

Today, the park is a relaxed, family-friendly stop with:
Benches and picnic tables
Shaded areas
Waste bins

Great for families with kids to pause, explore, and snap a few photos before continuing your tour.

Stop 4 Community Hall & Historic Church

For the history buffs, the Community Hall and Historic Church mark the heart of Steep Rock’s local life. The white-painted church is one of the community’s oldest landmarks. Across the street, the Community Hall continues to host weddings, socials, Fun Day celebrations, and community suppers.

This area offers:
Picnic benches and shade
Nearby parking
A peaceful place to rest and reflect

Just down the road, you’ll also find an 18-hole golf course (with nine tee-off boxes), available for daily or seasonal play. If you love pickleball, outdoor courts are ready for your next game.

Stop 5 The Wharf

One of the busier stops, the Steep Rock Wharf is a great spot to get your watercraft situated.

Popular activities here include:
Boating and fishing
Kayaking and canoeing
Swimming and sightseeing

The wharf area includes:
Bathrooms
An AED
Garbage and recycling bins
Shaded picnic spots

From here, paddlers can head toward Goat Island, home to Steep Rock’s famous goats, Hopper, Pogi and Willy, who often greet curious kayakers. Nearby, you can find kayak rentals, drinks, snacks and even a parrot!

Stop 6 The Cliffs

Don’t hold your applause, ladies and gentlemen, this is the main event.

No visit to Steep Rock is complete without seeing The Cliffs, the area’s most iconic and photographed natural wonder. Formed from ancient seabed limestone and shaped by time, wind, and water, these towering white cliffs are unlike those in other areas of Manitoba.

On sunny days, there’s a strong contrast between the bright white stone and the turquoise water.

Visitors can:
Walk the upper trail for panoramic views
Carefully access the water below at certain points along the cliffs

⚠️ Please explore with care: cliff edges can be slippery, and footing near drop-offs is uneven.

From the lookout spots, you can spot Goat Island in the distance and maybe even catch a glimpse of its famous residents.

Stop 7 — Steep Rock Beach Park

Now for some fun: Steep Rock Beach Park! This lively campground is the heart of summer fun.

Amenities include:
Swimming area

Beach Volleyball courts
Oversized outdoor games (chess, checkers, Connect 4)
