Gamifying Tourism Tuesday, November 24

What makes a visitor stop, stay, and tell the story afterward? More and more, the answer is “play”.

Games turn passive visitors into active participants. The same instincts that keep people hooked on a scavenger hunt, a passport stamp, or an unlockable secret can be applied to a main street, a museum, a trail, or an entire municipality. You don’t need a big budget or a custom app to do it. You need to understand what makes play work.

In this half-day session, storyteller and experience designer Rob Malo unpacks the mechanics behind game design (challenge, discovery, reward, narrative) and shows how to layer them onto the assets you already have. Through hands-on activities and real examples drawn from his award-winning projects, you’ll learn to spot the game hiding in your own place and leave with practical tools to build it.

Becoming Storytellers — Tuesday, December 1

You know your story; you’ve lived it. The family business, the restored building, the trail nobody else knows about, the reason you stayed. But knowing a story and telling it are two different skills, and the gap between them is where many good tourism experiences lose traction.

Tourism is storytelling. It’s what turns a stop into a memory and a visitor into someone who brings friends back next year. It’s what a website, a tour script, a menu, a wayfinding sign, and a two-minute conversation at the front counter are all trying to do.

In this half-day session, storyteller and performer Rob Malo works with you on the craft itself: finding the story worth telling, shaping it so it lands, and delivering it with confidence. Expect to be on your feet as much as in your seat; this is a working session with exercises, practice, and feedback, not a lecture on narrative theory.

Who it’s for: tourism operators, guides and front-line staff, attraction and museum interpreters, business owners, event organizers, and municipal and community organizations telling a place’s story.

Please note: There is no limit on tickets per organization. Interlake Tourism members may register as many people from their organization as they wish. Non-ITA Members are welcome to attend.
